For Lincoln residents, the fact that their unique sled run was named among the very best in the U.S. will come as no surprise. If you haven’t had the chance to visit yet, make it a point to visit this delightfully heart-stopping attraction…as soon as the weather decides to cooperate and gives us some decent snow.
Pioneers Park is well known as a natural oasis on the outskirts of Lincoln. This urban park even has its own bison herd! But that's not all it has to offer.
The park is also home to one of the top 10 sledding spots in America, according to USA Today. And the other contenders aren't piddly backyard hills, either - these are world-class sledding spots in states with more snow and more hills than Nebraska.
If you've ever had the pleasure of sledding at Pioneers Park, chances are you'll agree with the ranking. The wooden sled run gives you the equivalent of a giant push down the hill it sits atop. In the right conditions, you can keep sliding for a good 300 feet.
Be prepared to wait in line on a good snow day, though. This sled run isn't exactly a secret in Lincoln and surrounding areas. The day after a heavy snowfall, these wooden ramps are crowded with thrill-seekers who can't wait to launch themselves down that hill.
Even if you have to stand in line, the wait is worth it. There's nothing quite like the thrill of zooming down a snow and ice covered hill and ever-so-briefly fearing for your life.
If you’re really lucky (or if you decide to skip school or work for the day) you may just get the run to yourself.
