This State Park In Nebraska Is So Little Known, You'll Practically Have It All To Yourself

There’s no denying that Nebraska’s state parks and recreation areas are full of fun for all ages. But if you’re a fan of quiet, peaceful days spent in nature, you may want to avoid the most popular destinations. Instead, take a trip to Victoria Springs Recreation Area, an underrated and absolutely breathtaking little spot where you can camp, fish, hike, and even navigate the lake in a paddleboat.
Just six miles from the tiny town of Anselmo, Victoria Springs State Recreation Area is an unexpected bit of paradise in the midst of the Sandhills.
Victoria Springs is Nebraska's third-oldest recreation area and has been welcoming visitors since 1925. Its name is derived from the mineral springs in the area.
The mineral water here was acclaimed for its health benefits and bottled and sold around the country. It's not advisable to drink the water these days, but it's easy to see another reason the area was once so popular: it's absolutely gorgeous.
As beautiful as Victoria Springs State Recreation area is, it remains something of a hidden gem in the Sandhills. It's a tranquil place that's not nearly as crowded as the more well-known parks and recreation areas, making it the perfect place to unwind.
The 60-acre park is located on the former homestead of early resident and Custer County judge Charles R. Mathews. There are two historic cabins still standing here - one was Mathews' home and the other was the county's first post office.
If you're itching to get out on the water without the noise of some other recreation areas, non-powered watercraft are allowed, as are electric trolling motors. Paddleboats are available to rent, too!
Fishing is one of the most treasured activities here. The five-acre lake isn't exactly known for producing massive catches, but you'll still have a great time fishing for catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, and sunfish.
Enjoy a hike on the 1.3 miles of trails, or set the kids loose on the playground equipment. You're sure to be tired out after a whole day playing in nature, so why not sleep right there in the recreation area?
There are 21 powered camping pads and 60 primitive sites if you'd like to bring your RV or tent. Vault toilets are available for all guests. There are also two small cabins for rent, both of which underwent some upgrades in 2021.
The modern two-bedroom cabins are cozy and comfortable and just right for a family getaway. They each feature a kitchenette, two double beds with linens, and a private bathroom and shower.
Picnic tables are located throughout the park, but if you're interested in hosting an event there, you'll want to reserve the picnic shelter. It's spacious and somewhat protected from the elements.
There are other places to visit at this underrated state recreation area. This "Selfie Station" gives visitors the perfect place to take a photo commemorating their time at Victoria Springs
The quaint, one-room New Helena schoolhouse was built in 1888 and held classes until 1964. After that, it was given to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
You can reserve some of the campsites up to a year in advance, while others are first-come, first-served. You’ll need a Nebraska parks pass to get in, which can be purchased in advance or at the park.
