Open Since 1933, Coney Island Lunch Counter Has Been Serving Hot Dogs In Nebraska Longer Than Any Other Restaurant
In a time when dozens of restaurants pop up and then disappear within a few years, it’s great to see a classic place that has stood the test of time. This tiny lunch counter in Grand Island has been serving coney dogs, fries, shakes, and more since 1933. Its popularity has only grown over the years.
The iconic restaurant has always been known for its streamlined, no-nonsense menu and terrific food. Service is quick, which is a good thing because the dining room can get very crowded.
If you sit at the counter, you can even watch your food being made. There's something so satisfying about watching and hearing a hand-formed hamburger patty sizzle on the grill.
The menu is about what you'd expect from a little diner: burgers, grilled cheese, fries, and a few other sandwiches. But we've got to be straight with you: you're there for the coneys and milkshakes.
Customers swear that the coneys are as good as (or even better than!) those that you'll find at east coast diners. Flavorful hot dogs, mustard, onions, and perfectly seasoned meat sauce all combine on the bun to make for one of the most satisfying meals you'll ever have.
It's not a true Coney Island experience unless you order a thick malt to wash it all down. These flavorful treats are so thick you'll need a spoon, and they're perfect for sharing.
Fun fact: Coney Island didn't sell malts in its early days due to a gentleman's agreement between the owners of this business and the one next door. Coney Island would sell coffee but not malts, and the other business would serve malts but not coffee. Coney Island outlived that business, which was good news for everyone who loves frosty malts.
Other favorite menu items include the fries, burgers, and chili. If you fall in love with the Coney sauce on your hot dog and want to take some home, it's available by the pint or the quart.
Take a look around while you eat - the restaurant is filled with fun objects and mementos that have been collected over the more than 80 years the spot has been open. The original menu from 1933 still hangs on the wall! (Don't get too excited - those prices are a little outdated.)
