You know there are good views aplenty to be had in Grandview, West Virginia. Why, the name itself makes that plain. But most people head to this area to enjoy those excellent vistas and stunning overlooks in the spring, summer, and fall seasons. There's nothing wrong with that; spring, summer, and fall are beautiful seasons at Grandview. But don't forget to plan a West Virginia winter hike when the leaves have fallen from the trees, leaving the big views wide open to shine unobstructed in all their glory.
Grandview, a former West Virginia State Park, now falls under the umbrella of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve managed by the National Park Service. As its name implies, Grandview is famous for offering some of the best views of the famed New River Gorge to be had anywhere in West Virginia.
And if it's a view you're after, then the best time to visit this park is in the winter, when the leaves have fallen from the trees, and you can see through their branches to the mountain terrain beyond.
Try any of the Grandview overlooks or trails for excellent views that are hidden behind the trees for most of the rest of the year.
The Castle Rock Trail is particularly stunning, but be careful.
The narrow ledges along this route become treacherously slippery with a coat of snow or ice.
Other options include the Tunnel Trail, the Rim Trail, or the Turkey Spur.
All of them feature nice views in winter, including both short range views of rocks and cliffs and long-range views of rugged canyon and mountains!
Pro tip: Cleats and hiking poles can be helpful accessories when winter hiking, to help combat slippery trail conditions.
