Off The Beaten Path In Two National Forests, You’ll Find A Breathtaking West Virginia Overlook That Lets You See For Miles

High Knob Tower Trail in West Virginia offers breathtaking scenic overlooks and is accessible year-round.

Scenic overlooks abound in West Virginia, with some being easier to access than others. High Knob Tower Trail leads to an old, wooden fire tower, which is perhaps the most incredible lookout point in the state. Take a look:

Nestled right along the border with Virginia, High Knob Tower Trail is a 2.7-mile hike in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. It's an adventure suitable for any time of year, as the seasons boasts entirely unique, yet equally beautiful scenery.

The trail is uphill on the way in, with an elevation gain of just under 700 feet. Luckily, ample shade keeps you comfortable, even in the summer -- not to mention the incredible views that make up for the slight challenge.

Upon reaching the fire tower, your anticipation will certainly start to build. Just a few more steps lie between you and one of the most breathtaking scenic overlooks in the state.

Sweeping panoramas showcase the lush greenery that extends far as the eye can see in all directions. You'll also see Skidmore Lake and Switzer Dam in all their awe-inspiring glory, as the sun's rays reflect on the water below.

When the colder months roll around, this trail turns into a winter wonderland. Snow blankets the hillsides, interrupted only by small patches of barren plant life.

Snow-capped peaks tower in the distance, making for a postcard worthy scene. The only thing missing from this experience is a steamy mug of hot cocoa.

In addition to the tower, there's another lookout point on solid ground. You can practically see to the ends of the earth from up here.
