Part of the Monongahela National Forest, Dolly Sods covers more than 17,300 acres of land here in West Virginia.
All throughout the year, adventurers and explorers make their way out to this wilderness area to go hiking through the unique landscapes that make up this beautiful slice of our state.
Touching parts of Grant, Randolph, and Tucker Counties, inside Dolly Sods you'll be able to choose from more than 47 miles of trails to hike along.
Easy trails like the Beaver Dam Trail can be relatively quickly explored at only .7 miles long...
...while more difficult trails like the Red Creek Trail span across more than 6 miles in Dolly Sods.
Frequently compared to the Canadian tundra, Dolly Sods has similar flora and landscapes that will make you briefly forget that you’re still in West Virginia.
With elevations ranging from 2,600 feet to 4,000 feet, you'll be amazed at the beautiful views that can be achieved from the trails within the Dolly Sods Wilderness.

Other information to be mindful of? During the 1940s, the park was used by the U.S. Army to as a practice artillery and mortar range area. Hikers inside Dolly Sods are advised to not wander off while hiking, especially along areas like the Fisher Spring Run Trail because while a crew removed 15 mortar shells (some of which were still live), there’s still a risk of running into more uncovered live shells.
