When the temperatures rise, all we can think about is finding ways to cool down. Sure, you could stay indoors and enjoy the air conditioning, but where's the adventure in that? If you're up for something a bit more exciting, head to Lake Moomaw, a beautiful rural Virginia lake that doubles as one of the state's best swimming holes come summertime.
Covering a surface area of over 2,500 acres, Lake Moomaw is among the largest impoundments in the state of Virginia.
The lake is named for Benjamin Moomaw, who dreamed of bringing this lake to life in the Allegheny Highlands.
Today, the lake is among the most popular recreational sites in the region. Visitors enjoy fishing, boating, hiking, biking, camping, and...
...swimming! While it's a stunning place to visit any time of the year, summer is especially enticing. The crystal-clear mountain water is the perfect place to cool off on a hot day.
If you're interested in fishing, be sure you have a Virginia fishing permit.
There are two swimming beaches on the lake: one is at the northern end near Bolar Mountain Campground and features a parking lot, picnic tables, a playground, and restrooms. The second beach is located near Coles Point and, though not as big, also features a parking lot and restrooms.
If you do plan on going for a swim, be sure to wear water shoes. The bottom of the lake is known to be rocky, so you may want your feet protected.
If you'd prefer to stay on dry land, you'll find there are several trails along the lake. The most popular is the one that takes you to Greenwood Point Campground.

Since there's so much to enjoy, you might be tempted to pitch your tent and extend your stay. There are three campgrounds at Lake Moomaw and they're all beautiful!
