If you thought hiking in Virginia was just a warm-weather activity, we've got news for you! Many of Virginia's trails are actually more striking during winter when there are fewer crowds and less foliage to obstruct your view of the surrounding scenery. Today's trail is one that truly shines during the chilly season, and we'd argue that it's loveliest in the wintertime. The Osmanthus Trail is a 3.1-mile loop, and it's located at First Landing State Park near Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Venture out during the colder months in Virginia, and you'll be rewarded with plenty of room to roam. Plus, you'll get plenty of fresh air and maybe even some sunshine.
The Osmanthus Trail is a great introduction to First Landing State Park. Meandering through low-elevation bottomlands, this loop highlights the unique landscape.
Unlike other trails, this one doesn't lead to a view. It will however inspire a sense of peace as you make your way through the quiet pine forest.
The trail has a few boardwalks and some small hills. This particular trail isn't wheelchair-accessible, but the Cape Henry Trail is.
The Osmanthus Trail intersects with other popular trails at First Landing State Park, so you can create your own route and check out some of the park's other attractions, like these otherworldly Cypress trees.
If you get turned around, remember that the Osmanthus Trail is marked by a blue blaze.
Visitors should note that many visitors enjoy running on this trail, as there are fewer crowds and the pine needles make a soft surface for running.
Taking your time is encouraged, too! After all, that's how you'll admire every small detail about what makes this place so special in the winter. The refreshing temperatures, the ice-covered marshes, the migrating birds — it's all pretty magical!
