Take An Easy Stroll To The Unique Sand Caves In Southern Utah

Kanab offers a variety of activities including visiting Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, exploring caves, and enjoying local dining.

A trip to Kanab is always full of fun. There's so much to do in this cool southern town: visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, grab a bite at Rocking V Cafe, get a look at the Gunsmoke film set, and visit the nearby national parks and monuments. You can even learn how to be a blacksmith while you're in town!

You certainly won't be bored in Kanab. After a full day of exploring, you might enjoy a short, easy stroll to a cool cave.

Just north of Kanab, you'll find some cool caves that are well worth exploring. Drive past Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and look for them on the right.

They're hard to miss - you can see them right from the highway.

The caves were created in the 1970s by a company that was mining them for sand to make glass.

The trail up to the cave is short, just a quarter mile climb on the sandstone. There are several paths to the cave, but the easiest is the one to your far left. As long as you're wearing shoes that will provide good traction on the sandstone, it's an easy trip.

The caves are large, with several rooms that you can explore...

...and large windows that offer up some views and make for great photos.

The walls of the caves are covered in graffiti that has been scratched into the sandstone over the decades. Please refrain from adding your own while you're there. Though these caves aren't ancient dwellings, we still want to practice Leave No Trace Principles.

You can get some stunning photos of these caves if you arrive just one or two hours before sunset. The setting sun fills the caves with light, which makes the sandstone glow a rich, orange color.

These caves are free to access, and you're welcome to bring your pups along. Kids love this adventure too!

Be aware that there are some sheer drop-offs from some of the cave's windows, so keep an eye both kids and pups.
