You’d Never Know One Of The Most Incredible Natural Wonders In Utah Is Hiding In This State Park

Kodachrome Basin State Park is one of the most under-appreciated state parks in Utah. Approximately 2,200 acres in size, this park is quite small compared to others in the state but it's still home to all types of gems like incredible trails and picturesque camping opportunities. While this state park often gets overlooked by others in the Beehive State, many people don't realize it is home to extraordinary natural wonders in Utah known as sand pipes.

Kodachrome Basin State Park is located in southern Utah near the small town of Cannonville. Here, you can enjoy breathtaking views, unique cliffs, monoliths, and arches.

But this state park is known for one particular natural wonder — sand pipes.

Sand pipes are large columns of sedimentary rock that look like giant pipes sticking out of the ground. Geologists are not certain what caused these unique natural wonders in Utah but there are several theories ranging from earthquakes to ancient springs.

Throughout Kodachrome Basin and the surrounding area, there are 67 sand pipes. This large number makes them easy to find and enjoy.

One of the best ways to see the sand pipes at Kodachrome Basin State Park is on a hike. One easy trail is the Grand Parade Trail.

This is a 2-mile loop trail that is quiet, easy, and family-friendly. You will have little elevation gain and the views along your journey are beautiful. Just be aware that the trail is made from southern Utah red clay, meaning that if rain or snow is on the trail, you can expect a sticky, yucky walk.

Not only will you spot several sand pipes along this hike in Utah, but you’ll also come to some incredible viewpoints, giving you a whole new appreciation for Utah's beauty.

On the western side of the Kodachome Basin State Park is the Panorama Trail, another hike that gives you excellent views of sand pipes as well as several other cool features in the park. This trail can be considered a bit challenging and you can choose to complete it as either a 3-mile or a 6-mile loop.

The sand pipes are must-see natural wonders in Utah, making Kodachrome Basin State Park a destination that deserves a spot on your bucket list. This park is worth the drive from any corner of the state.
