Grafton is one of the most well-known ghost towns in Utah. This incredible destination is located in southern Utah, near Zion National Park. It has a fascinating history and was founded by pioneers in 1859. Today, if you visit this Utah ghost town, you’ll see signs of a once-charming community, including the Grafton Cemetery. While you can drive and see the cemetery, the Grafton Cemetery Viewpoint Trail will give you a new way to look at this location with so much history.
In the 1800s, Grafton was home to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who came to the area to grow cotton. Dozens of families lived in the area but due to many tragedies and hardships, such as sickness, flooding, etc., families began to abandon town, finding a better place to call home.
Today, several homes and buildings are still standing and the Grafton Cemetery is one of the more popular places in the ghost town. The cemetery is home to at least 80 graves, but not all graves have headstones.
When you visit the cemetery, make sure you have your hiking boots and tackle the Grafton Cemetery Viewpoint Trail. This hike is less than half a mile and takes you to the top of a short hill where you can enjoy an incredible view of the cemetery and the surrounding area.
The trail is fairly easy to follow but make sure you wear sun protection and bring plenty of water. There is no shade along the way.
This is a wonderful trail for some time alone in the great outdoors. It’s rare to see many people on this trail, meaning you will likely have a little time to yourself.
The view of the cemetery is quite remarkable … but so is the surrounding area. Don't rush through this trail — this is one area that’s full of history, beauty, and adventure.
