This Remote Texas State Park Has 2 Miles of Shoreline and Shells Scattered Across the Sand
Search for seashells on the Sea Rim State Park Trail. This is one of the best places for beachcombing in Texas, so bring your biggest pail.
As a native Southeast Texan, I grew up spending summer days at Sea Rim State Park (and the occasional winter day too, thanks to our mild coastal climate). My family always thought of the park as our little secret because it’s often overlooked as far as beaches go. Instead of braving the Galveston or South Padre Island crowds, give Sea Rim a go for your next beach day. The Sea Rim State Park Trail starts off on a lovely wooden boardwalk that leads right down to the water, so you can enjoy a leisurely afternoon of beach combing and soaking up the sun.
Tucked away in the small coastal town of Sabine Pass, Texas, Sea Rim State Park is a hidden gem with over two miles of shoreline and 4,000 acres of marshland. It’s remote and minimally developed, the perfect destination for a quiet beach day.
Aside from swimming in the Gulf waters and relaxing on the beach, Sea Rim has plenty more to offer in the realm of outdoor recreation. You can fish, go horseback riding, and take your canoe or kayak on two paddling trails. One of the trails is easy, while the other is more advanced, so you have options.
Perhaps the most underrated park activity is embarking on a stroll on the Sea Rim State Park Trail. This 3.4-mile trail starts on a wooden boardwalk that cuts through the rugged marshland on its way down to the beach. As the tall grass sways in the gentle Gulf breeze, it’s impossible to feel anything but peace.
The boardwalk leads straight down to the water, so bring your beach pails! Seashells are scattered all over the sand, and beachcombers will be in heaven. You'll see shells of all different shapes, colors, and sizes, so you can go home with quite a menagerie. And if there's a particular kind of shell that happens to be your favorite, you can have a treasure hunt of sorts looking for it. Seashells also make great sandcastle decorations, so get ready for hours of fun in the sun.
If you want to turn your beachcombing excursion into a weekend getaway, Sea Rim State Park has several camping options. There are 15 campsites with utilities, a cabin that sleeps six, and primitive camping is allowed along the beach. Nothing quite compares to watching the sun set behind the waves while listening to the soothing sound of the surf crashing into the shoreline.

Have you ever gone shell hunting at Sea Rim State Park? While you're in the area, stop by the nearby town of Nederland, whose Dutch heritage is alive and well in the buildings and charming town square.
