Texas is full of amazing hikes, but not many take you directly alongside a bridge spanning a breathtakingly blue lake. This trail in Austin is truly something special. Check it out:
Widely considered one of the most scenic urban drives in the country, Pennybacker Bridge features weathering steel arches and rolling hills in the background.
As beautiful as it is through the windshield of your vehicle, getting an up-close-and-personal view is an entirely different experience. This hidden gem of a hike takes you right through the majestic structure, culminating in an unparalleled overlook of Lake Austin.
You'll see people kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and overall just enjoying themselves on the water. It's so refreshing to see folks getting outside and soaking up that Vitamin D!
The trail is only 1.7 miles round-trip and fairly easy. Perfect for both pets and kids, this is an adventure the whole family can enjoy.
Several paths spin off from the main one, but some end up on private property - keeping an eye out for "No Trespassing" signs is a must. Nevertheless, the public portions of the trail are still absolutely breathtaking and leave nothing to be desired.
Just before the hike loops back around to the beginning, it takes you to a rocky ledge directly in line with the bridge. It's a perfect scene for family photos or just enjoying the stillness of nature as cars whiz by far beneath where you stand.
There are few things better than summertime hikes by the water, sun glistening off of its blueness while a gentle breeze rustles the leaves. We're so lucky to live in a state with so much natural beauty!
If you want to experience this little-known slice of heaven for yourself, parking is extremely easy to spot. The lot is located just north of the bridge on the northwest side of the road. Happy hiking!
