An East Texan’s Take on M. Night Shyamalan’s “Caddo Lake”

Texas's Caddo Lake is an eerily calm body of water, teeming with gators and filled with cypress trees covered in Spanish moss, making it the perfect setting for the recently released thriller, "Caddo Lake".

I’ve always thought Caddo Lake would make the perfect setting for a horror film. It's so dreamlike that it almost begs the question, "Is Caddo Lake a real place?" If you go back and read some of my previous articles about the lake, I often describe it as “hauntingly beautiful” — and I really think that hits the nail on the head. A quick search for Caddo Lake photos reveals an eerily calm body of water, teeming with gators and filled with cypress trees covered in Spanish moss. Oh, and let’s not forget that one of the nearest towns is named “Uncertain.” You can’t make this stuff up! Given my longstanding beliefs about the mysterious body of water, you can probably imagine how excited I was to hear that a scary movie about the lake was in the works. Produced by the legendary M. Night Shyamalan and available on the streaming platform Max, the film, simply titled “Caddo Lake,” aired in October 2024, and I watched it as soon as I could. Without giving too much away (yet!), all I’ll say is that my expectations were not only met but exceeded, and horror fans everywhere should add the movie to their shortlist.

First of all, let's get the basic information out of the way. Where is Caddo Lake, exactly? It's located in far East Texas near Jefferson, extending westward into Louisiana. This region is known for its swampy landscape, and Caddo Lake is no exception.

As an East Texas native who’s visited Caddo Lake several times, I was admittedly skeptical going into the film. Most of it was in fact shot on the lake, so I at least knew there was little room for error in terms of the setting. I had other doubts, though, particularly in terms of historical facts and general knowledge of the area. Sometimes films don’t do their due diligence to tick all the boxes, but I’m happy to report that everything checked out.

Let’s dive into the actual plot of the movie. Written and directed by Celine Held and Logan George, it’s a thriller centered around a young girl named Ellie (Eliza Scanlen), who lives near Caddo Lake along with her mother, father, and step-sister Anna (Carolina Falk). Anna goes missing one night, and brave Ellie ventures out onto the lake to look for her — but she quickly discovers the dark waters aren’t what they seem on the surface. When its water levels drop, the lake is a wormhole of sorts, sending all who enter hurtling backward or forward through time.

The scene switches to the story of Paris (Dylan O'Brien), a man determined to solve the mystery of his mother’s death. (She had a seizure behind the wheel and subsequently drove off a bridge.) While out boating on the lake, he discovers his mother’s old necklace in the boat and immediately realizes something strange is afoot.

I won't divulge every last detail, but in the end, the two stories come together in a beautiful way. It turns out that Anna is actually Paris's mother; both of them were pulled away from their families by the lake's sinister secret. Ellie is Anna's granddaughter and the son of Paris, and Ellie and her mother, Celeste (Lauren Ambrose), find solace in knowing their husband and father didn't leave them voluntarily.

The story's many twists and turns do a number on the psyche and by the end of the movie, my mind felt like it had been thrown into a blender (but I also immediately wanted to rewatch it). It was just so cool to see a place in my own backyard featured in a major film, which is why I recommend giving it a chance even if you aren't the biggest thriller or horror fan.
