Explore these picture-perfect, spring hikes in Texas. Brighten your day with wildflowers, scenic views, and beautiful spring scenery.
Spring is finally here! What better way to welcome the cheery season than frolicking by blooming wildflowers on the best spring hikes in Texas? I’ve curated several picture-perfect trails ranging from beginner-friendly strolls to moderate hikes that require a bit of extra effort. So, no matter your skill level, you’ll be able to enjoy everything that spring has to offer, including flowing creeks and the smell of fragrant blooms in the air.
Now is the best time to hike these nature trails in Texas, when the weather is pleasant, and the paths aren’t filled with too many people. If you’re ready to make your spring days a little brighter, lace up your hiking boots, grab your bottled water, and your phone or camera, and let’s welcome spring in Texas in the best way.
1. Lady Bird Johnson Arboretum Trail, Austin
When it comes to peaceful spring hikes in Texas, one low-key destination stands out in my mind. Located in Austin on the campus of the University of Texas, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is an underrated botanical garden always blooming with flowers. It’s especially pretty in spring when the meadows along the easy walking pathways come alive.
Between March and May, expect to see bluebonnets (the state flower), Indian paintbrush, primroses, and Black-eyed Susans along the easy, one-mile trail. There is a small fee to enter, but you could easily spend a day here seeing everything. Not only are there multiple gardens and an arboretum, but there are also picnic areas, a play area, tranquil ponds, and a cafe. Also, there is a historic welcome center with a gorgeous stone arch and an observation tower.
2. Crockett Gardens Falls Trail, Georgetown
For a more challenging hike that packs a big punch, head to Cedar Breaks Park in Georgetown. Here you’ll find the four-mile Crocket Gardens Falls Trail, featuring dense forests, lake views, wildflowers, and a pretty spring-fed waterfall at the end. The best part? You can walk behind the dripping falls for extra fun. This hike is perfect for spring!
Wear sturdy hiking boots to hike the rocky terrain, which has some steep sections along the way. Bring the kids and your furry bestie (on leash) along for this outdoor adventure. The park is known for camping, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to spend a night or two under the stars. Don’t wait for the summer to get here; you’ll want to visit from April to May when the waterfall is still dripping, or plan your trip after heavy rainfall. And although there is a small fee, it’s well worth it.
3. River Place Panther Hollow and Canyon Trail, Austin
What I enjoy most about the River Place Panther Hollow and Canyon Trail is that it’s filled with lots of surprises. Expect water views, creek crossings, waterfalls, tons of stairs, rock formations, overlooks, and more. There will be no dull moments as you trek the 5.5-mile out-and-back trail.
I would recommend this trail for the more seasoned hikers who enjoy scrambling across nature’s playground. Bring the pup along and be sure to pack snacks and lots of water to stay hydrated. Best time to visit? March to May, when the creeks are flowing, the wildlife is buzzing, and the wildflowers are blooming. There is a daily fee (credit card only), and kids under 12 are free. Since you’re in the area, you can plan a trip to Krause Springs in Spicewood to see the butterfly gardens and dip your feet in the pretty spring-fed pools there.
What Makes These Trails Perfect for Spring?
That’s easy! Wildflowers, flowing streams, and lots of beautiful nature scenes. If you want to brighten up your day, add these scenic trails in Texas to your list. In my opinion, spring should be the beginning of the year because everything wakes up after winter’s slumber. The air feels lighter, the colors make us feel alive, and hearing the songbirds warms our hearts.
It’s one of the best times of the year to be outdoors to witness nature unfold...magically. Plus, the trails are less crowded this time of year, meaning you could get lucky and have them all to yourself. It gets no better than that! Hiking is among the top spring activities in Texas, and if you have never seen these trails, it’s time to do something different. After all, the Lone Star State is full of beautiful places waiting for us to explore. Now is your chance to do so!
Before you leave for this or any hike, always check the weather. Mother Nature is unpredictable.
