The 8.6-Mile Trail In Texas That Leads To An Extraordinary Scenic Overlook

When it comes to the best hikes in Texas, it's impossible to narrow it down to just one (or even 10!). But I will say that Big Bend National Park easily offers the most "bang for your buck," so to speak, when it comes to hitting the trail. The park is chock full of breathtaking hikes for all skill levels, and one of my favorites is the Pinnacles Trail. This trail is by no means easy, but once you see the views, you won't mind the difficulty. I dare say it might even be the best hike near Terlingua, Texas.

Sometimes a leisurely stroll does the trick, but other times, I'm in the mood for a tough hike that really works up a sweat, and the Pinnacles Trail in Big Bend National Park delivers the latter.

Clocking in at 8.6 miles in length, this out-and-back route ascends over 2,000 feet to the base of the iconic Emory Peak. It's quite a popular trail, so I recommend getting started early in the morning to beat the crowds (and the heat in the warmer months!).

Another benefit of sunrise hikes is - you guessed it - the sunrise. You just can't beat those West Texas morning skies!

You'll find the trailhead near the Chisos Basin Ranger Station, and it climbs to a point between Emory Peak and Toll Mountain. The trail officially ends at a junction with the Emory Peak Trail, at which point it merges with the Boot Spring Trail and continues southeast towards the South Rim.

Soak up stunning views of the surrounding landscape, studded with skyscraping mountains and vast swaths of untouched land. "Magic" is the only word I that appropriately describes how it feels to be thousands of feet above the desert floor.

Just remember to leave your pups at home because dogs aren't allowed on this particular trail. Also, make sure you wear durable shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks!

So if you're looking for a hike that's both challenging and mesmerizing, you can't go wrong with the Pinnacles Trail. It will show you a whole new side of Texas' beloved Big Bend National Park.
