The Palmetto State's own "grand canyon" is located in the Upstate. Jocassee Gorges in South Carolina is a landmark of unimaginable beauty that stuns both locals and visitors alike. In fact, it's famous for its magnificence. In 2012, National Geographic designated the Gorges a "destination of a lifetime," and included the Jocassee Gorges in a list of "50 Of The World's Last Great Places." This gorgeous destination beckons to lovers of nature and art alike, because this landmark is truly breathtaking.
Nestled along the Blue Ridge Escarpment, the Jocassee Gorges tract includes about 43,500 acres that extends from the upstate of South Carolina into North Carolina.
What makes the Gorges different? A series of quickly dropping vertical walls in the mountains have been carved out over time by rushing mountain waters, leaving vertical drops of as much as 2,000 feet in as little as one mile.
Named for a legendary Indian princess, Jocassee means "place of the lost one." The recorded history of the area dates back to 1539 when Hernando DeSoto brought his team of explorers to the Gorges. Control of the Gorges was once in the hands of the Cherokee Indians who relinquished the area to the U.S. as part of a treaty signed in 1785.
Lake Jocassee now fills 7,500 acres of the Jocassee Gorges in South Carolina. This man-made lake was formed by Duke Energy in a project that began in the late 1960s. The lake fills in approximately 385 vertical feet of the bottom of Jocassee Gorges.
