Most people don't realize that South Carolina has six designated National Natural Landmarks that are recognized for their biological and geological historic significance. The National Natural Landmark list includes everything from a South Carolina swamp, to a forest and one of the state's beautiful barrier islands. It also includes a massive geologic wonder in a less-traveled part of the state over in Lancaster County.
Known as 40 Acre Rock, this geologic wonder located near Kershaw is a sight you simply have to experience in person.
It's included in the 40 Acre Rock Heritage Preserve that encompasses more than 2,200 acres perfect for hiking and exploring.
The preserve includes trails, waterfalls, creekside hiking, ponds and a giant almost flat slab of granite like no other you'll find in the Palmetto State.
We're not sure why the rock is dubbed the "40 Acre Rock," when its size is actually more close to 14 acres. Perhaps it's the long-range views you'll have of the Piedmont when standing on this colossal stone surface.
You'll be mesmerized by the biodiversity you'll find year-round at 40 Acre Rock, and the colors of the pools in the rock's surface are out of this world. To see more of 40 Acre Rock you really should set aside a day to visit in person. It's located at 2207 Conservancy Rd, Kershaw, SC 29067.
