Tippecansett Trail In Rhode Island Winds Through 10 Miles Of The Arcadia Management Area

The Tippecansett Trail in the Arcadia Management Area offers a scenic 10-mile hike through forests, ponds, and historic sites.

The Arcadia Management Area is one of Rhode Island's finest gems. With an area of 14,000 acres, it's the largest recreation area in the state, by far. We're lucky to have so much natural beauty right here in our backyard... and the Tippecansett Trail is the perfect hike for those who want to see it all.

The Tippecansett Trail is located near West Greenwich in the Arcadia Management Area.

At just over 10 miles in length, it's not exactly a short jaunt. However, its small elevation gain and well-marked pathways have earned it an easy ranking from the hiking pros.

The trail either begins at the state border or at Beach Pond, depending on whether you'd like to head north or south.

The hike offers a little bit of everything, from forest to ponds to historic sites.

It won't be long before you come to an old graveyard with headstones dating back to the 1800s.

Stop to catch your breath and check it out.

While this trail is definitely used most in the summer, it's definitely a fun Halloween hike as well.

But if you come between September and February (or April), you'll want to wear an orange vest to let hunters and other hikers know you're there.

The rest of the trail includes a few scenic overlooks, more historic structures, and rocky terrain...

... and, of course, the sheer beauty of Beach Pond.

Beach Pond is a large 430-acre pond that sits on the border between Connecticut and Rhode Island. There used to be a public swimming area here, but now it's just meant to be enjoyed from the shore.

The Tippecansett Trail is wonderful, but it's long -- so don't feel like you have to walk all 10 miles in a day.

Rest assured, there's beauty waiting for you around every corner here.
