Everyone has wandered out into the backyard and looked up at the stars or taken a moment to stare at the moon. For the best views of the night sky, there is a spot in Rhode Island where stargazing is taken to a completely new level. The Frosty Drew Observatory is a place where anyone can feel like an astronomer for the night.
There's a little domed structure that sits in the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge in Charlestown. It may look small by day but under the night sky magical things happen right here.
The Frosty Drew Observatory was opened in 1988 as a way to allow the public better access to astronomy. You may not be able to touch the stars at this spot, but they seem close enough to reach out and grab.
The observatory has a fully automated, high-powered 16" Meade LX200 Schmidt Cassegrain telescope surrounded by a viewing platform. Take a peek to reveal some spectacular sights.
The computer driven telescope knows the position of approximately 64,000 deep-space objects and can locate each by pressing just a few buttons.
A key to the observatory is its prime location. The sky above is extremely dark (perhaps the darkest between New York and Boston) and shows off the stars perfectly.
Visit the observatory and take in views of the rings of Saturn, the Galilean moons of Jupiter, Lunar geography, star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, and much more.
Enjoy stargazing on Friday nights when the Frosty Drew Observatory is open to the public free of charge.
This natural show of the wonders in the sky begins at 6 p.m. and lasts until at least 11:30 p.m. and sometimes longer depending on cloud conditions.
Visit the Frosty Drew Observatory at 62 Park La., Ninigret Park, Charlestown, RI 02813. For more information, go to their website. Follow them on Facebook for updates on which astronomical wonders are visible from the observatory throughout the year.
Have you ever been stargazing at the Frosty Drew Observatory? What wonders did you see? For checking out the stars, this spot takes the cake but if you're searching for an amazing sunset, take a seat at this harborside restaurant.
