Oakland Beach Has A Seaside Boardwalk In Rhode Island That Stretches For Over A Mile

Rhode Island is affectionately known as the Ocean State, and for good reason -- our coastline is second to none. And if you're looking for a nice, pleasant boardwalked beach walk, just head to Oakland Beach in Warwick. You can get in a good mile on the boardwalk there, not to mention the fact that the views are fantastic.

Oakland Beach is located in the south-central area of Warwick on Greenwich Bay.

Greenwich Bay is a tributary of Narragansett Bay.

This quiet, peaceful place was once the site of a military campground in the late 1800s.

For six days, the Rhode Island Militia (now the Rhode Island Army National Guard) trained here. But in 1895, the encampment was relocated to a larger and better equipped facility

The beach was at its most popular in the 1930s, when it had a a Ferris wheel, a bathing beach, and rail service to Providence. All of those things are in the past now.

People now come here for beachfront dining, playing with their children at the playground, enjoying seaside picnics, or walking the boardwalk.

The sturdy boardwalk wraps for a mile around the area, overlooking Narragansett Bay.

You can catch views of both the Newport Bridge and Jamestown Bridge, not to mention sailboats and cabin cruisers.

Follow the boardwalk to the Western tip at Strand Avenue and back again for a nice two mile trek.

A beach walk is nice and refreshing in any season, and having the boardwalk here really helps.

This iconic eatery is known for its delicious 'chowda,' and you won't find better views than from their outdoor seating area. If it's too cold to dine outdoors, just grab a seat by the window.

Oakland Beach may not have the fanfare of some of Rhode Island's other beaches, but it's still a great place to go for a walk.

On most days, it stays quiet here, so you won't have to battle the crowds.
