The Wahkeena Falls Loop Trail In Oregon Is A Winter Hike You Won’t Want To Miss

Explore the Wahkeena Falls Loop Trail in Oregon during winter for a scenic and moderately-difficult hike with fewer crowds.

Wintertime is still hiking time here in Oregon, and you'll find plenty of great trails to explore. The Wahkeena Falls Loop Trail is particularly pretty this time of year, so bundle up, lace up your boots, and head for the Columbia River Gorge.

You can catch a glimpse of Wahkeena Falls from the viewing platform, but if you're up for a hike, you'll want to make your way up the trail.

The Wahkeena Falls Trail is 5.6 miles, out and back, and it's considered a moderately-difficult hike.

During winter months, it can be cold and pretty muddy, so make sure to bring some good boots and dress in layers so you'll stay warm and toasty.

This trail is often crowded, but on chilly winter day, you won't find as many people here, especially if you can break away for an afternoon hike on a weekday.

Make your way across the little footbridge that crosses Wahkeena Creek to start your journey.

You'll climb up a series of steep switchbacks, surrounded by lush greenery that might serve to distract you from the strenuous climb. This is Oregon beauty at its best!

If there's a breeze, the waterfall's spray often makes these switchbacks icy and treacherous. It's a good idea to have some traction cleats on your boots for this winter excursion.

Wahkeena Falls drops 242 feet into the creek below. The word "wahkeena" is a Yakama word that means "most beautiful," and we have to agree that it is indeed quite beautiful.

Photos of Wahkeena Falls are featured in many guide books and on tourism websites.

Make sure to check out the historic stonework bridge here, too.

Fairy Falls is one of several other waterfalls you'll encounter on this trail. It's a fan-type waterfall that only drops about 25 feet or so, but it's a pretty, misty waterfall that's especially picturesque.

You'll find other smaller, unnamed waterfalls along this trail, too!

It might be cold and snowy out there, but that's no excuse to laze around on the couch. Explore the Wahkeena Falls Trail this season.
