Surges Of Up To 100 Meteors Per Hour Will Light Up The Oregon Skies During The 2020 Lyrid Meteor This April

Gaze heavenward at certain times of the year, and you'll see an amazing show - meteor showers that send dozens of shooting stars across the sky. Every April, the Lyrid meteor shower appears, and this year should be a particularly good one to see it.

In 2020, the Lyrid meteor shower will make its appearance in the skies over Oregon from April 16th through the 25th. Oregonians should be able to enjoy several nights of prime viewing.

For the best views, try to find a place with little or no light pollution. The stars appear much brighter in spots far from cities and towns.

There are many special spots around the Beaver State to stargaze, but keep in mind that this year, some places will be closed to the public due to COVID-19.

Make sure to follow your community's guidelines for social distancing or shelter-in-place orders.

Whether you're able to find a quiet spot in nature, or view from your own backyard, you should still be able to spot plenty of meteors tracing across the sky.

Luckily, this year's meteor shower falls during the time that the moon is waning. On April 22nd, a new moon will mean that the sky is particularly dark. The stars will appear even brighter in the night sky!

You'll be able to see meteors as early as 10 p.m., so settle in for a show. You'll typically be able to see 10-15 meteors per hour, but the Lyrid meteor shower is well-known for its surges of up to 100 meteors in just an hour.

It's impossible to predict when surges will occur, so keep an eye out!
