The Easy Oklahoma Hike That Doubles as a Prehistoric Treasure Hunt

I’ve been captivated by fossils ever since I was a little kid. Seeing firsthand evidence of the ancient creatures that once walked the earth is such a surreal experience. Fossils are living history, forever frozen in time and offering a glimpse into what the world looked like before humans arrived. I like to combine my love for fossil hunting with my passion for hiking, and if you can relate to that, you’ll love the Fossil Trail at Sequoyah State Park in Hulbert, Oklahoma. In my opinion, this is one of the best hikes in Oklahoma that allows you to see an impressive collection of fossils and stunning scenery.

The Fossil Trail is easy to overlook because it’s quite literally a blip on the map. Coming in at under half a mile long, this easy loop only takes about 10 minutes to walk, making it an ideal beginner hike, especially when you factor in the mere 68-foot elevation gain. It’s also great for kids and dogs. The trail leads through a densely forested landscape before skirting the edge of Fort Gibson Lake. 

No matter the season, the views are stunning. In the winter, the barren trees paint a hauntingly beautiful picture as they stand in calm stillness. Fall turns the leaves brilliant shades of amber, gold, and crimson, while spring and summer boast lush greenery and vibrant wildflowers. A clearing in the trees showcases a panoramic view of the lake that will make your jaw drop. You’ll pass huge slabs of rock that look like they’ve been there for centuries, and their jagged edges frame the shoreline to form a postcard-worthy scene.

As gorgeous as the scenery is, it isn’t what makes this trail so special. That would be the dozens of fossils embedded in the rock. You could easily miss them if you aren’t paying close attention, so keep your eyes peeled. It’s unclear exactly what creatures are fossilized here or how long ago they lived, but one thing is certain: seeing them firsthand will make you feel like you’ve hopped in a time machine to walk with the dinosaurs.
