Who says you can't find a slice of paradise in the city? In Oklahoma, at least, you most certainly can. In fact, we feel like the little spot we're featuring today, Lake Hefner, is one of the most beautiful places in the state, and it's right in the heart of Oklahoma City. When it comes to beautiful places in Oklahoma, this sparkling gem of a lake can't be missed. It's a must-see for every Okie's bucket list, and every visitor should take notes and visit, too.
Lake Hefner was originally created in 1947 to expand the water supply for the city.
It was named for one of Oklahoma City's most beloved mayors, and even though it's surrounded by the ebb and flow of urban living, there's nothing boring about this beautiful little piece o' paradise smack-dab in the middle of the city.
The lake is an impressive 2,500 acres in size, and it averages nearly 30 feet deep.
There's no swimming or. camping permitted here, so make sure to stay aware of that. No worries, though - you can do all the boating you want, and there's also great fishing here, too.
You'll encounter a long list of fish species thriving in the sparkling water.
You'll likely catch bass, bluegill, crappie, and other sport/game fish. Lake Hefner is also famous among birdwatchers, believe it or not, thanks to the intriguing variety of avian friends who show up here at different times of the year.
You'll find plenty of walking and biking trails surrounding the lake, too.
It's got 18 miles of shoreline to wander about on, but even if hanging out in the sun nearby the water or boating on the water all day isn't your thing, you'll still find plenty to enjoy.
Lake Hefner is popular among photographers for obvious reasons.
You won't find many places quite like this one anywhere else in Oklahoma, though there are plenty of gems scattered around the state. You've also got to see the lighthouse, and the marina - talk about photogenic!
...and, at the end of the day, nothing beats watching the sun set over the sparkling water as you take in the incredible and special sights that Lake Hefner has to offer.
