This Is the Most Claustrophobic Hike in Oklahoma —Would You Try It?
This Oklahoma hiking trail over and through narrow rock formations may force you out of your comfort zone.
As someone who is severely claustrophobic, there are certain places I avoid. I'll always opt for stairs over a small elevator, and I've nearly had a panic attack on a trail as I made my way through a very, very tight slot canyon. And unless a cave is incredibly roomy inside, I probably won't explore that either. But if you're braver than I am, the Robbers Cave Trail at Robbers Cave State Park is a claustrophobic hike in Oklahoma you may want to try. Not only is it incredibly scenic, but it's quite rewarding.
Robbers Cave Trail Location
Robber's Cave Trail offers a unique glimpse into the geology of Robbers Cave State Park, an 8,000-acre southeast Oklahoma state park located just five miles north of Wilburton within the San Bois Mountains. Here you'll discover sandstone bluffs, cliffs, ridges, and caves that are perfect for intrepid adventurers to explore. There's also a bit of fascinating history here, as outlaws, like Jesse James, the Dalton Gang, and Belle Starr, once used a cave here for hiding. The park, named after that cave, was established in 1935 and developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Hiking Robbers Cave Trail
While it's rated as moderate by AllTrails, this 0.4-mile hike may be short, but it's certainly not "short and sweet" if that's the type of hike you're looking for. There are steep sections, rock scrambling, and expect numerous unstable rocks underfoot as you navigate the trail. A pair of sturdy hiking boots or shoes is essential for this hike. At one point, you'll go through a narrow slot canyon, so if you're as claustrophobic as I am, you may want to turn around. However, if you can muster up any bravery, it's a rewarding hike to complete in its entirety.
Tips for Hiking Robbers Cave Trail for the First Time
As I've already mentioned, you will need a good pair of hiking boots or shoes to make this trek. Make sure your footwear has non-slip soles and provides support for your feet and ankles. While kids are welcome to come along, please ensure they also have proper footwear. And you'll most likely have to hike at a slower pace than you're used to with them in tow. If you're bringing your dog, keep them on a leash. Several hikers have noted that the trail isn't well-marked, so keep your eyes peeled for markers and follow the path as it leads. Additionally, consider downloading the AllTrails+ app to assist with navigation.
