You’ll Love Digging For Crystals At This Unique Oklahoma State Park

Great Salt Plains State Park in Oklahoma offers a unique opportunity to dig for hourglass-shaped crystals, the only place in the world where this can be done.

One of our favorite outdoor activities in Oklahoma is digging for crystals in Great Salt Plains State Park. The digging season typically begins in April and right now is a great time of the year to enjoy this fun adventure you can't do anywhere else in the world. Ever wanted to go crystal mining in Oklahoma? Here's your chance:

Great Salt Plains State Park in Jet, Oklahoma, is the only place in the world where you can dig for these hourglass-shaped crystals.

You'll find the state park about 45 miles northeast of Enid at 23280 S Spillway Drive in the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge.

Grab those shovels and buckets because digging season is open and you’ll want to visit this attraction that is unlike anything else in the world as soon as possible...especially before the weather gets disagreeable.

The salt that coats this barren land was left over from an ancient ocean that once existed in Oklahoma.

It's one of the coolest places you'll ever see in Oklahoma.

Once you pick a spot in the vast, open area, get out those shovels and start digging.

Oklahoma is the only place in the world where these hourglass shapes form inside these crystals.

It's formed this way because of the way the sand and water combine together, creating the shape.

Individual pieces have been found up to seven inches long and large clusters up to 38 pounds.

Admission is free of charge and every visitor can remove up to 10 pounds plus an additional cluster.

Digging season is open from April through October. Just bring your shovels, buckets, and sunscreen and enjoy a day exploring this unique park.

It's a one-of-a-kind experience every Oklahoman should have at least once in their lifetime. Once you start digging, the kids will never want to leave!
