This Little-Known Trail Is Quite Possibly the Best Walking Path in Ohio
Pioneer Park in Montgomery, Ohio, is home to one of the best walking trails in the state. It's a perfect place to stretch your legs or just spend a few hours relaxing in the outdoors.
I love lacing up my sneakers and going for a long walk with my dog. Not a hike, but a walk. There is a difference. It's like when my half-marathon-running husband says he's going for a run. He "warms up" by doing an "easy" mile or two; for me, that warm-up is my entire run! I like taking my time and enjoying the scenery, and there's a little-known trail in my neck of the woods that never disappoints. Lace up your walking shoes and let's enjoy a leisurely stroll on what I consider the best walking path in the state, the trail at Pioneer Park in Montgomery, Ohio.
Sometimes, the most memorable and meaningful adventures are the ones that await in your own backyard. I live in Montgomery, Ohio, a small suburb just north of Cincinnati that's known for its walkability and abundance of parks. Just half a mile from my home, there are two city parks and a nature preserve, and it's no exaggeration to say I visit at least one of these natural oases every day.
Pioneer Park is my favorite, however. This diminutive park is a glorious place teeming with native flora and fauna, and features a wonderful paved footpath that's perfect for a slow stroll or walk with your pup.
By "walking path" I mean just that; the "trail" is just half a mile long. The trail is often populated with dog walkers and older couples, though, when I visit in the early morning or late afternoon, I am sometimes the only person at the park, but it's never lonely.
I have a two-year-old Golden Retriever named Bear and I actually leash trained him on this trail! It's paved and wide enough for multiple walkers (both two- and four-legged!), making it wonderfully family and dog friendly.
When I have a minute, I like to sit on the pier and just let my mind wander. The path winds through a densely wooded area and around a small pond, bathing visitors a sublime, total sensory experience.
I visit Pioneer Park weekly to walk, run, stroll, or simply sit; this is a beautiful little oasis that's a true treasure just waiting to be admired.
