There's nothing like a refreshing waterfall hike after a day of exploring in the sun.
Although you can't wade in Ohio's waterfalls, they're still some of the best best destinations to hike to in the summer months. The following is a short list of some our favorite little-known waterfalls in Ohio. See which ones you've discovered before and which ones need to be added to your summer bucket list. (Please note: The nature preserves and wildlife areas do not permit pets along the trails.)
1. Charleston Falls Loop Trail (Charleston Falls Preserve)
The trek to Charleston Falls is perfect for a day hike when you need a little adventure in your life—but not too much. The 1.8-mile loop to the falls is a fairly easy hike and there's also a small cave that's fun to find along the way. Once you've reached the falls, you'll encounter beautiful boardwalk views.
2. Dundee Falls (Beach City Wildlife Area)
Hiding close to Ohio's beloved Amish Country, you'll find a little-known wildlife area that's home to a beautiful waterfall. A total of 2 miles out and back, this trail can easily be completed within an hour or two. It's rated as "easy" on All Trails due to little elevation gain, but it can be challenging to hike after rainfall. Less than a half mile into the trail, you'll encounter the main waterfall.
3. Glen Helen Falls and the Yellow Spring (Glen Helen Nature Preserve)
The Inman Trail at Glen Helen Nature Preserve takes you to both Glen Helen Falls and the official "Yellow Spring" that the town of Yellow Springs is named after. (Pictured is Glen Helen Falls, or "The Cascades.") It's a loop trail, categorized as "moderate" and it begins at the preserve's main entrance.
4. Raven Rocks Falls (Raven Rocks)
Privately owned and operated, this little-known nature preserve is a true hidden gem few Ohioans know about. The .4-mile loop trail that's open to the public is rated as moderate by AllTrails. The waterfall along this trail is undeniably the best part. It's both secluded and little-known, so you likely won't encounter a soul.
5. Rock Stalls Falls (Rock Stalls Natural Sanctuary)
Although it's also privately owned and operated, Rock Stalls Natural Sanctuary is open to the public daily until 5 p.m., unless otherwise indicated. If you enjoy chasing and photographing waterfalls, this is a natural sanctuary you'll fall in love with. Each new waterfall you encounter along the 1.1-mile loop trail is like uncovering a best kept secret.
6. Cascade Falls (Nelson-Kenendy Ledges State Park)
The short and sweet .5-mile trek to Cascade Falls is a best kept secret for locals. Along the Yellow Trail, a boardwalk leads the way to Cascade Falls. The Yellow Trail also features a recess cave beneath Cascade Falls, which gives you a really unique perspective of the falls.
