What better way to experience some of the best of North Dakota's great outdoors this summer than to take a hike through one of the most picturesque places in the state and end it with a swim? This spot in the Peace Garden State should be one of your top nature destinations, especially if you do this specific thing. Here's why:
Head over to Lake Metigoshe State Park for the perfect trail and beach combination you must try this summer.
Lake Metigoshe State Park is located near Bottinea, North Dakota and is one of the most popular state parks in the Peace Garden State - and for good reason!
You could head straight for the swimming beach in Lake Metigoshe, or you can take a gorgeous interpretive trail that meanders through the park before looping back to the swimming area.
The Old Oak Interpretive Trail was North Dakota's very first National Recreation Trail, built in 1974. It is about three miles in length.
The trail will take you through the trees and alongside another lake where you can see the strikingly blue water.
You can grab an interpretive brochure at the beginning of the trail and read it as you take this beautiful journey.
This trail is especially beautiful to take in the late summer and fall when the leaves are changing colors.
Lake Metigoshe State Park is one of the most well-known spots for leaf peepers to visit in North Dakota each year and you can see why. The park offers cabins, campgrounds, and more to extend your stay and make the most of the visit, too.
Once you reach the end of the trail, you'll be back to where the fantastic swimming beach is. Here you can enjoy a dip in the lovely, pristine water!
Manmade pools have nothing on natural swimming holes like this, and Lake Metigoshe has the perfect way to experience it all.
Lake Metigoshe State Park is located 14 miles northeast of Bottineau, ND. You can find more information on the park and a trail map by clicking here.
