Why Winter Is This North Carolina State Park’s Secret Season

Summer is perfect for exploring North Carolina's state parks. The seemingly endless hours of daylight paired with those warm temperatures beckon us to explore all that our state's mountains, lakes, rivers, and beaches have to offer. But winter is another story altogether.

Bare trees and frigid temperatures mean that being outside may not be an obvious choice, but it's almost always rewarded. For proof of this, we're venturing to Goose Creek State Park. It's one of the most popular warm-weather destinations in the region, but we'd argue that winter is actually its secret season.

Goose Creek State Park is a treasure trove of boardwalk trails, cypress swamps, wetlands, and beach, all waiting to be explored. It's located a little over 30 miles from Greenville, but when you're there on a winter day, you'll feel completely — and wonderfully — secluded. One of the best hikes to enjoy the park on a winter day is Palmetto Boardwalk and Ivey Gut Trails. These two trails combine to make a 4.1-mile out-and-back adventure highlighting the park's loveliest scenery: marshes, swamps, towering pines, and more. The trail is easy to follow and well-maintained.

As you explore the network of trails, keep an eye out for historical markers that provide unique insight into the landscape. Lumber companies nearly cleared the area out before the park was officially designated by the state.

You'll also want to observe the natural world around you to see what wildlife might make an appearance. In addition to a host of migratory birds, some creatures that call this park home include barred owls, turkeys, minks, gray foxes, white-tailed deer, and the occasional bobcat.

After your hiking adventure, be sure to spend some time on the beach, which is nestled along the Pamlico River. It's a small beach lined with pines and live oaks, but its beauty during the wintertime is captivating. The windy shore offers visitors some places to sit privately and enjoy the waterfront scenery. It's a perfect place to sit, reflect, and soak up a little winter sunlight.
