The Hidden Nature Park In North Carolina With Its Very Own Shrub Bog, Insectivorous Plants, And So Much More

If you are looking for a hidden nature park in North Carolina, head to the uncommon Green Swamp Preserve — one of the most unique places to visit in the Brunswick Islands. Here you'll discover magic in the insectivorous plants and the dense evergreen shrub bog, an environment made possible by the longleaf pine savannas. Another reason to drive to Supply is its lovely location at the intersection of Ocean Highway and Southport-Supply Road. To be sure — this is one of the most unusual places on the planet.

The extraordinary land was donated to The Nature Conservancy - including 13,850 acres in 1977 and 2,577 acres in the late 1980s - by the Federal Paper Board.

One way to get to know this wild property is by taking the Green Swamp Preserve Trail.

Part of its otherworldly charm is vast populations of Venus flytraps.

Also look for butterworts, sundews, and bladderworts among the 14+ species of insectivorous plants, creating a most enchanting environment.

And we enjoy finding the distinctive pitcher plants of which there are four species.

Get close to study their unusual lifestyle and method of eating.

The easy 1.3-mile out-and-back trail is surrounded by a rich, serene pine forest.

Out of the 16,427 acres, approximately 13,000 of those are made up of the dense evergreen shrub bog.

Its wooded shrubs are led by the evergreen gallberry and the waxy-leaved sweetbay.

You may even spot one of these long-legged creatures creeping along the greenery.

The Green Lynx Spider can run very fast and is known to jump on its prey (yikes!).

It's hard to believe this beautiful space benefits from high temperatures and periodic burning.

And you may wonder how such beauty can remain. Did you know the roots of the orchids, insectivorous plants, and ground cover of the Green Swamp are protected from the hottest fires?
