The Bayou Coquille Trail Near New Orleans Is A 1-Mile Out-And-Back Hike With A Marsh Overlook

Bayou Coquille Trail in Barataria Preserve offers a scenic and wildlife-rich hiking experience near New Orleans.

One of the best parts about Louisiana is that our weather is fairly mild, enabling us to go outside and enjoy the great outdoors year round. If you're looking for a change of scenery from the hustle and bustle of city life, there's a beautiful preservation area not too far from New Orleans where you can take a scenic stroll through the swamps. You'll find the Bayou Coquille Trail within the Barataria Preserve.

It's about a 30-minute drive south of New Orleans in Marrero, Louisiana.

Whether you're flying solo or with your whole family, the Bayou Coquille Trail is a wonderful little one-mile trail that's one of the most scenic in the state.

The whole preserve is peppered with boardwalk and gravel trails that will take you on a beautiful journey through the surrounding swamps and wetlands.

The boardwalk trails allow you access to parts of the swamps that you just wouldn't be able to get to any other way.

Benches and informational placards along the trail are perfect for sitting for a spell and taking in the view or scanning for wildlife.

Speaking of wildlife, you'll want to stay alert while on the trails. You never know what also may be using them...

Barataria Preserve is in a pretty remote area, encompassing over 20,000 acres of wetlands, bayous, and swamps. When you're here, you're in their home, so you stand a good chance at spotting the many alligators, snakes, turtles, and other swamp critters that call the animal home.

At the end of the trail, you'll come to a footbridge.

And from the bridge, you'll have a picture-perfect view of the canals and marshes.
