We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Strangest Hiking Trail Name in New Mexico
The Catwalk National Recreation Trail is a hiking trail in New Mexico with a funny name. You won't see any supermodels — just towering canyons and lush greenery.
When you think of the word “catwalk,” what comes to mind? For me, it’s certainly not a hiking trail in New Mexico. The Catwalk National Recreation Trail might have a funny name, but it’s one of the coolest hikes in the state. Tucked away in the Gila National Forest near Glenwood, New Mexico, this easy, 2.5-mile trail is suitable for all skill levels and showcases the landscape like you’ve never seen it before. You won't find any supermodels here, but the views are more stunning than any fashion show.
The Catwalk National Recreation Trail takes you on a fascinating journey over Whitewater Creek, traversing the rugged canyonlands by way of elevated boardwalks, also known as catwalks. It’s a very well-marked trail with an elevation gain of less than 500 feet, offering a safe introduction to hiking for beginners and a peaceful and leisurely stroll for seasoned pros.
Kids and pets are welcome here, so turn it into a fun outing for the whole family. While it is a popular trail, you can usually enjoy some solitude if you start early. The catwalks are a remarkable feat of engineering, attached to the canyon walls that tower on either side of the trail. You’ll weave through the rocky terrain as if navigating a maze, with no idea what lies ahead. The lush greenery of the Gila National Forest contrasts beautifully with the jutting cliffs, and hearing the leaves rustle in the wind evokes feelings of calmness and tranquility.
Since the catwalks are built over a creek, you’ll see a few small waterfalls along the way that add to the relaxing ambiance. If you’re an angler, bring your fishing gear and cast your line. This is the next best thing to staying in a cabin with a fishing pond in New Mexico!
A handful of stream crossings are the most difficult part of the trail, but water levels are usually low. There are logs and rocks to help you get across — kids love this part because it makes them feel like they’re at a water park. Larger dogs should be able to hold their own, but small dogs may need to be carried. Feel free to bring hiking poles if you need to. The trail also has a few staircases, but none are extremely steep or tall.
When you finish your hike and return to the trailhead, you can relax under the shade of the cottonwoods and enjoy a picnic before you leave. There are plenty of tables to sit at, and I can’t imagine a better way to end a memorable adventure.
Visit AllTrails for more information about the Catwalk National Recreation Trail, including current trail conditions. I recommend downloading the AllTrails+ app before heading out, especially if you’re a frequent hiker. I can’t count how many times it’s saved me in remote areas with no cell service (yes, it offers offline map access!).
