Known better for its mountains and desert landscapes and, of course, the Rio Grande, New Mexico is also home to several magnificent lakes that provide a wide range of recreation to visitors. One of the most remote and, therefore, cleanest lakes in the state resides in the Taos Ski Valley. To access Williams Lake, one must take a moderate hike uphill. However, reaching this pristine lake in New Mexico is certainly worth the climb.

Tucked away in a remote area of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and just below Wheeler Peak within the Wheeler Peak Wilderness of the Carson National Forest is a beautifully clean body of water known as Williams Lake. How you get to this lake is via a hike along Williams Lake Trail.

If you're able to conquer a 3.7-mile hike with just over a 1,000-foot elevation gain, your efforts will be rewarded when you reach the top and have access to the beguiling Williams Lake.

Obviously, if you're going to do a hike like Williams Lake Trail, make sure you bring enough water, snacks, sun protection, and gear with you. Due to rocks along the trail, make sure you're also wearing appropriate footwear as well.

As you climb up the trail to the lake, take in the gorgeous scenery of the mountains and forest that surrounds you. Sometimes when I hike, I focus on the destination over the journey and don't always take the time to stop and view my surroundings. However, in an area like this, you should absolutely stop every now and then to appreciate how gorgeous this part of New Mexico truly is!

Eventually, you'll arrive at Williams Lake which is a glacial lake sitting at an elevation of 11,040 feet. While this remote lake may tempt you to swim, you may not want to as it's quite cold and a bit muddy. However, you can certainly try!
