Take a Boardwalk Trail Through the Wetlands of the Bosque Del Apache Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico
Take a scenic trail through the wetlands of Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico, where you can spot migratory birds, wildlife, and sweeping desert landscapes.
The Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is easily one of the most enchanting areas in all of New Mexico. This 57,000-acre refuge, located south of Socorro, is an ideal spot to capture some of the most incredible images of birds, deer, and other wildlife. While there are a few ways to explore this area, one of our favorites is the family-friendly Marsh Overlook Trail.
The Marsh Overlook Trail is a short and easy journey that takes you over wetland with open water and cattails. It is one beautiful way to get up close to the water, walk through desert landscape, and receive a new perspective of this incredible wildlife refuge. You’ll find the trailhead and parking lot just off Wildlife Drive.
The Marsh Overlook Trail is approximately 2.5 miles. The trail is flat and perfect for a beautiful adventure outdoors. Plan on at least 1 hour to complete this trail in its entirety, and even longer if you stop and enjoy the views along your way (which I strongly recommend).

This is definitely not a trail that you will want to rush through. As you walk over the open water, you may see all types of birds like herons, blackbirds, swallows, and more. Keep your eyes open for other wildlife like muskrats and turtles as well. There are areas where you can stop along the trail to sit and admire the views surrounding you. This area is like a little slice of heaven and is surrounded by New Mexico’s natural beauty.
Keep in mind that the boardwalk is only a portion of this trail. The Marsh Overlook Trail also includes dirt terrain, which makes it less accessible for strollers or individuals with mobility challenges. If you wish to only explore the boardwalk trail, it is wheelchair and stroller-friendly, and the trail is approximately 0.2 miles.
There is something relaxing and soothing when spending time outdoors, and the Marsh Overlook Trail at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is a delightful place to be. Keep in mind there are other places around the refuge to hike, some trails much harder than the Marsh Overlook Trail. There is also a daily entrance fee that you will need to pay to access this trail.
