Welcome to the Box Recreation Area, also known as "The Box."
This rugged natural area is 320-acres of beautiful canyons and scenery just west of Socorro.
The box canyon has five different cliffs on each side, and they're perfect for natural rock climbing.
Whether you're a true technical climber or are just starting out, there are simple cliffs as well as extremely difficult ones to climb upon.
Some of the more challenging climbs are "Waterfall Wall" and "Corner Block."
Not only does the rhyolite rock provide the ultimate spot for climbing, but the canyon is also truly a beautiful place to stroll through.
The Box brings about hikers, campers, and those looking for true New Mexico beauty. Look for a designated area for camping sites.
The Box is supervised by the Bureau of Land Management, and they advise that only those who know how to rock climb attempt to do so. Rock climbing is a high-risk activity, so please proceed with caution.
