If You Live In New Mexico, You Must Visit This Amazing State Park

Bottomless Lakes State Park in New Mexico features unique sinkholes filled with water, offering various recreational activities.

Sinkholes may sound more like a hazard than an attraction, but they are the reason why people visit one New Mexico state park. Bottomless Lakes State Park consists of eight sinkholes filled with water. These oases are so beautiful that they inspired the founding of this state park – New Mexico’s first – in 1933. Ever since, people have been taking advantage of the recreational opportunities available at this unique place.

Lea Lake actually consists of three sinkholes and is the hub of the park. It’s the perfect place to spend a hot day. Sink your toes into one of New Mexico’s few sandy beaches and take in the rippling, blue waters.

There are many ways to enjoy Lea Lake. You can swim, use non-motorized boats, or try a little paddle boarding. (Pedal boats and boards are available to rent.) It’s even possible to go scuba diving!

Back on the beach, play a volleyball game or head to one of the covered tables for a picnic.

If you’d like to stay longer (and who wouldn’t?) the park contains 32 campsites.

The scenery is so tranquil at sunset. Since the nearest city is Roswell - 14 miles away - once the sun slides below the horizon, light pollution is minimal and the stars stunning.

Bottomless Lakes State Park earned its name after a group of 19th century cowboys tried – and failed – to determine their depth.

The sinkholes are all a little different but this aerial image provides a good overview of the park.

The Devil’s Inkwell, the smallest of the lakes, is known for its astonishing hues. The 32-foot deep pool is filled with algae and aquatic plants.

These result in turquoise or even green water that stands out against the intensity of the surrounding red rocks.

Lea Lake is the only place in the park where you can swim. You can do some light hiking along the trails to view the other sinkholes.

Lazy Lagoon is the deepest at 90 feet.

Bottomless Lakes State Park is a one-of-a-kind destination. If sinkhole swimming isn’t on your summer bucket list, add it now!
