Salvador Dali was a genius and an icon. His works are so unique and incredible that once you've seen one, you'll likely never forget it.
Dali lived from 1904 to 1989, and he created over 1,500 paintings in his lifetime. Many are immediately recognizable as his, like The Temptation of St. Anthony which he painted in 1946.
Persistence of Memory - the one with the melting clocks - is one of his most well-known works. He painted it in 1931 when he was just 27.
He's one of the most famous surrealists of all time. Although the main subjects of his surreal paintings were pulled from his imagination, the backgrounds of them were realistic landscapes. He often used deserts as the backdrops for his works.
The deserts in the background of Dali's paintings often look a lot like the striking landscapes of Nevada's Black Rock Desert.
This desert is in northwestern Nevada. It covers over 300,000 acres of land.
It also has over 120 miles of historic trails to explore.
The contrast between the sand in this desert and the blue skies above is often quite breathtaking.
When there are clouds in the sky, the vistas are also quite spectacular.
Although it's unlikely that Dali was inspired by the Black Rock Desert in particular, it's easy to compare its landscapes with the backgrounds in his work.
When you visit this incredible part of the state, you're sure to be inspired yourself. Bring your camera - or maybe even some paints. You never know what you'll create when looking out on this beautiful landscape.
