Okay, let's be clear. Nevada has its fair share of beautiful places. In fact, our state is full of breathtaking wonders and natural beauty. However, Lake Tahoe was recently named the most beautiful place in Nevada by Condé Nast Traveler, and honestly, we have to agree. We may share this breathtaking mountain lake with California, but we don't mind. There's plenty of beauty to go around!
Split right through the middle on the Nevada-California state border, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America (and the second deepest in the U.S.), and boy, is it impressive.
Known for its pristine blue waters and mesmerizing surroundings, Lake Tahoe attracts a whopping 2.7 million visitors a year. We can't say we blame them, and we consider ourselves incredibly lucky to call this lake ours - well, half of it, at least.
Nevada communities like Carson City, Reno, Virginia City, and Minden are all just a short drive away from this beauty. Not to mention, the communities of Incline Village, Glenbrook, and Zephyr Cove are right on its shores!
For Nevadans looking to explore this alpine gem for themselves, Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park is a great place to start. The park consists of multiple units on the northeast shores of the lake, including iconic destinations like Sand Harbor, Cave Rock, and Spooner Lake. Each of these units makes for a great starting point for your Tahoe adventure.
On top of boasting out-of-this-world beauty, the lake is also rich in history. From its role as the center of Washoe Indian territory to the early 19th-century resort development on its shoreline, there's plenty to learn about Tahoe. Built in 1935, the Thunderbird Lodge is one of many estates that belonged to some of the nation's wealthiest individuals.
Of course, recreation is abundant at this mountain oasis. Whether you opt to explore the lake's cold waters via kayak or paddleboard, or trek across the surrounding mountains on hiking trails or snowy slopes, there's always an adventure to be had at Lake Tahoe.
Simply put, you haven't lived until you've seen this beautiful destination with your own eyes! If you're lucky enough to live in Nevada, then consider it a must.
