Based out of Carson City, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad is a historic railroad that lets passengers experience the Nevada countryside in a truly unique fashion. Along with hosting several themed trips throughout the year, the railroad offers two daily train rides that must be experienced.
The train industry was wildly important in Nevada's early days. Regular train service between Virginia City and Carson City first began in 1870. The primary mission of the railway was to bring timber to the mines in Virginia City and also transport ore from the mines to the mills along the Carson River.
You can relive this historic trip for yourself when you take a ride on one of the railway's incredible trains. There are two options that you can partake in: a 35-minute ride through the Comstock mining region which is offered daily, or a 6-hour adventure with a stopover in Virginia City which is offered on weekends.
No matter which option you choose, you're bound to be blown away by the golden hillsides of this incredibly historic area. Both train rides are accompanied by narration that is loaded with historic facts and anecdotes.
You'll pass by a number of historic sites that will definitely peak your interest. Tunnels, mines, and the iconic Gold Hill can all be observed from the train. It's truly like taking a ride through history!
If you have time to spare, we definitely recommend taking the longer train ride which provides a stopover in Virginia City. As the quaint town appears over the hillsides, you can really get an idea of the important role the town played in Nevada's history.
