Smith Falls State Park in Valentine is a beautiful place to spend the day outside in Nebraska. And while there's plenty to do here, we love visiting Smith Falls the most!

Smith Falls Trail is just over one mile and offers an out-and-back way to reach the waterfall.

The route, which is primarily made up of a slightly elevated boardwalk, is simple to follow.

And the lack of any real elevation makes it great for hikers just starting out as well as kids with little legs that tire easily.

In the spring and summer, you'll be surrounded by lush greenery. Spotting the waterfall through the trees as you get closer is fun for kids.

Because the state park sits right on the Niobrara National Scenic River, you'll have plenty of chances for water views. And there's even a fun bridge crossing.

As you get closer you'll be able to hear the falls as they cascade over the rocks.

And once you reach it, the sight is magnificent.

At 65 feet tall, Smith Fall is the tallest waterfall in the state. Take some time to snap a few photos before heading back the same way you came.

And don't forget to factor in some extra time at the waterfall when the weather is warm. There's a good chance you'll want to splash around!
