10 Majestic Spots In Nebraska That Will Make You Feel Like You’re At The North Pole
Nebraska's winter landscapes transform into enchanting scenes of beauty despite the harsh weather.
Most Nebraskans seem to have a love/hate relationship with winter. On the one hand, heavy snows and harsh storms can be destructive and difficult to deal with. On the other hand, snow, ice, and colorful winter skies can transform our landscapes into beauty that's almost otherworldly. Let's forget for a while about the negatives, pretend that we can enjoy winter from the indoors if being outside isn't your thing, and just focus on how enchanting winter can look in the Cornhusker State.
1. These magical frozen riverbanks.
The crystalline water and frosted branches almost look like an enchanted road leading someplace mysterious.
2. Lazy chunks of ice in Lake McConaughy.
You almost expect to see a polar bear balancing on one of them.
3. The Scotts Bluff Monument in a wintry costume.
Wrapped in snow, the picturesque monument takes on a whole different appearance.
4. The frozen falls at Platte River State Park.
The water isn't quite frozen solid yet - but Jack Frost has definitely cast his spell on this lovely spot.
5. The back roads of Lancaster County.
It takes a talented photographer to capture a moment where the windswept snow drifts look almost like a different planet.
6. Approaching Chadron all dressed up for winter.
The snow makes the road looks so desolate and bare that you can almost imagine you're headed to a remote North Pole outpost.
7. Is this the way to Santa's workshop?
No, it's Chautauqua Park in Beatrice...but you can almost see Rudolph in the distance.
8. The absolutely perfect, untouched snow.
This is the kind of scene you hope is never marred by footprints, pawprints, or tire tracks. It looks like a huge, perfectly frosted cake.
9. This vast frozen tundra.
This is actually Wilderness Park in Lincoln...but it's hard to tell when it's frozen solid like this.
10. The frozen Big Blue River.
This just looks like a watercolor painting. How spectacular.
See, Nebraska? Winter isn't all that bad. Provided we bundle up, have a solid supply of hot cocoa and warm soup, and keep our boots dry, winter can be quite beautiful.
