This Easy Fall Hike In Nebraska Is Under 2 Miles And You’ll Love Every Step You Take

Fall is such a great time to hike in Nebraska. The oppressive heat has subsided, the trees are dressed up in lovely colors, and there's plentiful wildlife to spot. If you're looking for a short hike the whole family can enjoy, this spot in Gretna is absolutely perfect.

Schramm Park State Recreation Area is one of eastern Nebraska's prettiest natural areas. In the summer it's lush, green, and shaded; in the fall, the colorful leaves are just incredible.

There are a few miles of trails to enjoy; the Short Loop trail is just 1.3 miles long and easy enough for the whole family.

You won't encounter too much traffic on the trail, even in the summer season.

The trail passes over a series of bridges, including this neat suspension bridge.

The short loop interlocks with the park's two other trails; if you hike them all the way around, the total distance is about three miles.

Stick to the Short Loop for a quick, easy, and extremely scenic journey. In the fall, the insects have mostly died off and the heavily wooded trail is pleasant even without bug spray.

You can expect to see some wildlife along the way, including deer, ducks, geese, and lots of fish.

Make a day of it and stay for a picnic among the trees. Plan to visit the Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium and little fishing museum for a truly unique day trip.
