The Unique, Out-Of-The-Way Beach In Minnesota That’s Always Worth A Visit
Iona's Beach in Minnesota is known for its pink pebbles and the unique musical sound they make when hit by waves.
Being the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Minnesota has a lot of beaches! Some are sandy spots, like the beach at Afton State Park. Others are covered in rugged rocks - and maybe even a few agates - like Brighton Beach in Duluth. And still others are something else entirely, like the beach we'd like to introduce today. Visitors to Iona's Beach first notice the pink pebbles that line the shore. But they soon discover the beach's other unique feature: its sound. Read on below to learn about this unique, out-of-the-way Minnesota beach that is always worth a visit:
Iona's Beach is a scientific and natural area, or SNA, on Minnesota's North Shore. It's near Two Harbors, about 50 miles north of Duluth on Highway 61.
When you arrive, you'll walk along a path that cuts through a thick stand of trees...
...and emerge onto one of the most unique beaches in Minnesota - and maybe the world. It's made up of millions of flat, pink rocks. They're truly a sight to see as you stroll past the chilly waves of Lake Superior.
There are a variety of rock types here, but most have a pinkish hue. After many years of being battered by waves, most have been worn flat and smooth.
But the pink color isn't the only reason Iona's Beach is special. When the waves hit the pebbles, they make a musical tinkling sound.
Because of the musical rocks, Iona's Beach is often called the singing beach. It's a hidden gem of the North Shore, and one of the most fascinating beaches you'll find anywhere.
Next time you're traveling along Highway 61 on the North Shore, be sure to pay this beautiful beach a visit. Between the pink rocks and the musical sounds, it's a truly magical place that everyone should visit at least once!
And if you just can't wait until you visit in person to hear the music of the rocks, check out the video below to hear it:
