Visiting Minnesota state parks is probably the best way to see the state's diverse wildlife. Each park has something to offer, from soaring eagles to hard-to-find moose to abundant white-tailed deer. Minnesota animals are great, and it's always exciting to see them up close. But the Land of 10,000 Lakes is also home to plenty of interesting plant life. From the carnivorous plants at Big Bog State Recreation Area to the ancient trees in Itasca County, there are plenty of plants to explore! One more to add to your list: the endangered dwarf trout lilies found at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. Read on to learn about the park and its endangered species:
Nerstrand Big Woods State Park is a 2,882-acre state park in southeastern Minnesota, just over 50 miles south of Minneapolis.
Much of the park is made up of a forested area of many different kinds of trees. The forest is awash with color in the fall. It's one of the most popular times to visit!
Of course, the park is most famous for the beautiful waterfall within its borders. Hidden Falls is a short hike with a big payoff. It's a must for anyone visiting the park.
But there are many other trails to hike, with things that are much more hidden than Hidden Falls.
Follow the boardwalk trail towards the waterfall. The 1-mile loop is easy for hikers of all levels.
Look closely at the ground. In the warmer months, you'll find plenty of insects, mushrooms, and mossy logs.
And if you're lucky, you'll find the rare dwarf trout lily. These little white flowers only grow in a few counties in Minnesota.
Not only are the delicate flowers pretty. They're also endangered species! For your chance to see one of these rare flowers in person, pay a visit to Nerstrand Big Woods State Park.
