It’s easy to connect with the natural world in southeast Michigan. The Detroit metro area is home to some tranquil and beautiful nature centers that are perfect day trip destinations. Enjoy some fresh air and exercise while taking in an ever-changing wild landscape. Put on your walking shoes and load up the kids: here are three nature centers you’ll want to experience.
1. Belle Isle Nature Center, Detroit
This five-acre gem of a park is surrounded by undisturbed wetlands on Belle Island State Park.
There’s a lot to see and do at Belle Island. The facility includes indoor animal habitats, a bee exhibit, a bird observation window, an outdoor native butterfly garden, a natural play area, and the Blue Heron Lagoon Nature Trail – the hiking trail will take you to some really nice views of the Detroit River.
2. Johnson Nature Center, Bloomfield Hills
This beautiful preserve is just 30 minutes from downtown Detroit and it feels like another world. It has a four-acre pond, a large variety of pine and hardwood tees, and a diverse mix of native flowers and plants.
There are two miles of wood-chipped walking trails on the property so it’s a wonderful place for a stroll. There’s a good chance you’ll spot wildlife, like red foxes, coyotes, deer, and mink.
3. Sterling Heights Nature Center
This nature center connects people with the aquatic natural world. Just 30 minutes from downtown Detroit, the center has a 900-gallon aquarium filled with aquatic life that you might find in area lakes and rivers. There are also some fascinating animal displays.
After taking in the indoor facility, continue your adventures outdoors with a hike on the adjoining park that will take you to some amazing river views.
