This Little-Known Trail Is Quite Possibly the Best Cross-Country Ski Path in Michigan
Cross-country ski through a winter wonderland that’s one of the best winter trails in Michigan. Enjoy the winter beauty of Au Sable State Forest as you move.
The State of Michigan was not joking around when it slapped the two words “winter” and “wonderland” on its license plates. This is because there are so many great ways to enjoy the colder months in the Great Lakes State. I love to take winter hikes with my family and pets, but sometimes I need a little more of a workout—and that's where cross-country skiing comes in.
There’s an amazing cross-country trail in Roscommon, Michigan, that I think is one of the best trails in Michigan for Nordic skiing. If you’re looking for a different way to view the beautiful winter scenery in Michigan, you have to check out the Mackinac Cut and Wild Turkey Cross-Country Ski Trail.
Whether you’re walking in summer or fall, or cross-country skiing in the winter, this is an easy route for most travelers. It’s barely less than 2 miles long and only varies in elevation by 16 feet. Parts of this trail are only open in the colder months, when there's sufficient snow cover on the ground, so it’s best to visit if you’re planning on cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.
You won't encounter many maps or guides while you're out on the path, so make sure you keep following the loop until you reach the trail head—you'll also want to bring your GPS, just in case. Some travelers who've attempted to complete the trail in the summer point out that sections that encroach on private property are blocked off in the warmer months, but they reopen in the winter.
These wide paths are great for cross-country skiing. The trail is located in Au Sable State Forest, which means you’ll need a recreation passport to enter. Don’t forget to bring your own equipment, either, as there are no rentals available at this wild and beautiful spot. The beautiful snow-covered views along this trail are what make it one of my favorites in the state.
This trail is considered easy due to its distance and lack of elevation gain. It serves as a great introductory path for people who have never cross-country skied before. It’s also a great place to take the kids for a snowshoeing adventure on the dedicated trails.
Not only will you find some beautiful scenery while on the path, but you will encounter some amenities along the way, like huts where you can take a break or dodge out of the weather. As I mentioned before, some portions of the trail lie on private property. Please be respectful of these areas as you glide through.
I’d definitely recommend checking out Mackinac Cut and Wild Turkey Cross-Country Ski Trail. The thought brings me back to hiking with family during the holidays. You will be able to make the most of the cold and snow by gliding through this trail on cross-country skis.
