When I was a kid, one of my favorite parts of summer was taking a trip to the local berry patch with my family. No matter which berries we were picking, getting the chance to pick my own berries to turn into future desserts became a highlight of my summer break each year. Now that I live in the Great Lakes State, I'm hoping to recreate my childhood memories during Michigan berry picking season.

For one of the best blueberry farms in Michigan, look no further than True Blue Farms in Grand Junction. It's a hidden gem tucked away from town, but it's so worth the visit. I visited while on a quest to find berries for cobbler, and relived the nostalgia of my youth—belly full and mouth ringed purple from all the taste-testing. Here's what to know before visiting the Michigan orchard experience.

Why This Michigan Farm Is Worth the Drive

True Blue Farms is located in the small town of Grand Junction in Western Michigan. It's about an hour away from Grand Rapids and Lansing in the middle of the state, so it's definitely off the beaten path. But the trip here is so worth it.

Established in 1993 with 25 acres of berries, True Blue Farms is the product of four generations of seasoned blueberry farmers. Since its start, the farm has grown into one of the largest blueberry growers in the country. No wonder Grand Junction is called "The Blueberry Capital of the World!"

Visitors can choose from four varieties of prepackaged fresh and frozen berries, or go searching themselves in the impeccably trimmed rows of bushes. The juiciest, largest blueberries are grown here thanks to the "Lake Effect," aka the temperate weather provided by the winds and waters of nearby Lake Michigan.

Beyond amazingly plump berries, True Blue Farms simply offers an experience that families won't soon forget. Their U-pick is one of the best summer activities to do in Michigan.

What to Expect at True Blue Farms

Once you arrive at True Blue Farms, you'll be swept away to rows of lush blueberry bushes and peaceful outdoor scenery. Grab a bucket or plastic bag and start sifting through the green bushes to find the deepest purple-blue berries. Keep berries that are greener or hard on the vine to fully ripen.

After spending a few hours in the field with your friends or family, head into the storefront on site to find local goodies, including baking mixes, meats, candy, sauces, and more. The best part? Everything is blueberry themed—you could even get blueberry-flavored jerky here!

U-pick berries are purchased by the pound, and you can carry them home in the plastic bags provided. If you're not into picking your own fruit, the farm also sells prepacked and frozen berries, perfect for any delicious summertime dessert or fruit salad.

The Best Time to Visit for Berry Picking

Peak blueberry season in Michigan is mid-July, so the best time to visit True Blue Farms is around then. The farm typically announces when the blueberries first ripen in June, and then provides frequent updates about U-pick conditions, so you're guaranteed the freshest, ripest berries when you go.

Your visit time might also depend on the type of blueberries you're hoping to gather. While the Jersey, Rubels, and Bluecrop varieties peak from mid-July to mid-August, the Elliot variety peaks later, from mid-August to September. Learn more about their flavor differences here.

You'll want to try to get to the farm when it first opens in the morning. That'll prevent you from searching through picked-over bushes later in the day. Hours vary, but the U-pick typically opens around 8 a.m. Stay tuned to the Facebook page for weekly schedules and picking conditions.

Picking Your Own Blueberries

There's a certain joy in picking your own berries straight from the vine. As I walk through the rows of bushes and take in the delicate beauty of each blueberry bushel, I feel confident I'm getting the best quality fruit around. Freshness aside, I'm happy I'm also taking care of my health.

Did you know blueberries are considered "nature's first aid kit," and carry the same amount of antioxidants as five servings of other fruit and veggies? They're also great for helping the body fight aging and disease—talk about a powerhouse of a fruit!

Studies also show that the simple act of spending time in nature provides fantastic stress relief and lowers blood pressure. A win-win for blueberry lovers and pickers.

Tips for Planning Your Visit

Before visiting True Blue Farms, check the website or call the farm to scope out the picking conditions. Come prepared with extra containers and bags just in case, along with plenty of water, closed-toed shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses for sun protection.

Bring extra cash and your credit card with you in case you need them for parking and admission. Also note: Dogs aren't allowed at the farm, and kids must be supervised at all times.

While you're out and about, hit up other U-pick experiences, like these Michigan cherry destinations or the Ancient Oak Sanctuary in Grand Junction. You won't want to miss other berry opportunities in Southern Michigan, also known as the most productive fruit-growing environment on the planet!

Have you visited True Blue Farms yet? If not, plan your summer visit today, and prepare to bring home the juiciest, bluest berries in the "Fruit Belt." You'll find yourself eating them right off the vine—just like I did as a kid.
