This Scenic Michigan Trail Is Even Better in the Winter
Michigan's Highland State Recreation Area is full of wildlife and particularly great for birding. The park's A Loop trail is a beautiful winter hike.
Midwesterners know how brutal it can be going outside in the winter, but even more how hard the cabin fever sets in after weeks of bone-chilling cold. That's why it's always a good idea to have some hiking trails or parks on your radar so you can take advantage of the less intense winter weather when we get it. One hike you should keep in mind is located at the Highland State Recreation Area in White Lake, Michigan. These trails are a blast in the warmer months, yet one stands out even more in the winter.
When you really need fresh air and a brisk adventure, head over to the Highland State Recreation Area A Loop trail. This 3.6-mile loop route will get your heart pumping with its many hills, but you have plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the views, too. It's considered a moderate hike, though the climbs can be a bit steep—and slippery if the ground is wet or icy. Take it easy when you need to. After all, there's nothing better than a casual stroll in a Michigan winter wonderland, is there? Plus, you can see for yourself why we think Highland State Recreation Area is one of the best state parks near Detroit.
For fellow wildlife enthusiasts, the A Loop is also a great place for us to get our critter fix. It is one of the best trails in the recreation area for birding. With all those bare trees and wintry white, there is potentially more opportunity to see many birds. My favorite wintertime bird, which is also easy to spot, is a red male cardinal. They stand out so brightly against the soft winter snow.
If you prefer a more adventurous day in nature, the A Loop is also mountain-biking-friendly; just be aware of hikers as you zip around the trails. Elsewhere in Highland State Recreation Area, designated activity trails are available. You can also go horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. Pups are welcome on some of the recreation area's trails, including the A Loop, but they must be leashed at all times.
For industrious folks who want to see more of the area, head over to the Historic Haven Hill Trail. Also known on AllTrails as the Haven Hill Loop, this trail will take you to the ruins of a Ford estate. Located within the Haven Hill area are the remnants of a homestead of Edsel and Eleanor Ford, the son and daughter-in-law of Henry Ford. The estate was built to give the Fords a retreat, a haven, to go to away from the bustling Motor City of Detroit. Construction began in 1924, the family moved into the lodge in 1926, and the estate was completed in 1931. Unfortunately, the cedar lodge was destroyed by fire in 1999.
